VALE / ベイル

神奈川県川崎市の住宅街に位置するアトリエ兼住宅です。中層住宅密集地で、日当り、風通し、視線の抜けが良好とは言えず、外部環境を活かす設計セオリーは得策ではありませんでした。そこで発想を変え、外部に手がかりを求めるのではなく、住宅内部に外部のような空間をつくり、その環境を享受する方法を模索することにしました。

高度地区の影響で高さは8m程度までで、4m道路の影響で容積率も必要最小限という設計条件でした。はじめに敷地の可能性を最大限に引き出すために、地下１層から地上３層までの施工可能なコンクリートのボリュームを想定しました。次に幅3.6m、長さ11.4mの東西に長いボリュームを分かつように中央に深さ10mの吹抜けを設けました。東西に分かれた各層をつなぐように水平に４つの小さな橋を架け、垂直には小さならせん階段を架けています。10mの自然光のグラデーション、反響する声や音と深い静謐、対流する温かい空気と冷たい空気など、まるで小さな谷のように、視線、動線、現象が自然とこの住処の中心に集まってきます。

道路から見ると東と南の傾斜した外壁が構えています。離れて見ると穏やかに、近づくと少し険しく表情を変えます。その切り立つ様子は渓谷の入り口のようにも見えますが、厳しい道路斜線を交わすために生まれた都市性を帯びたファサードです。1階のエントランスを入ると右に住宅への玄関扉、正面にアトリエとつながるガラスで囲われた小さな橋があります。生活空間から分かれたアトリエの存在はいい意味でこの住処に緊張感を生むピースとなっています。

住宅街に並ぶ家々やマンション群も見方を変えれば、地面に立つというより屋根という都市の地形に沈んでいるようにも見えます。実は良質な外部環境を取り込みづらい都市に住まうことは「地」と向かい合うことなのかもしれません。そんなことを思いながら、この建物にベイル＝小さな谷と名づけました。

This atelier/residence is located in a residential area of Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture.　It is in a dense mid-rise housing area, where sunlight, ventilation, and line of sight could be better, and the design theory of taking advantage of the external environment could have been a better idea. Therefore, we changed our mindset and decided to seek a way to enjoy the environment by creating an exterior-like space inside the house, instead of seeking clues from the outside.

The design conditions were limited to about 8m high due to the building height restriction and required keeping the floor-area ratio to the minimum necessary due to the regulations for a narrower road facing in front. First, to maximize the potential of the site, we envisioned a concrete volume that could be constructed from one level below ground to three levels above ground. Then, a 3.6m wide, 11.4m long, and 10m deep atrium was built in the center of the building. Four small bridges were built horizontally to connect each of the long east-west layers, and a small spiral staircase was built vertically. The 10m gradation of natural light, the reverberating voices and sounds and deep tranquility, the convective warm and cold air, etc…  Like a small valley, lines of sight, lines of movement, and phenomena naturally come together in the center of this house.

When viewed from the street, the sloping east and south exterior walls are set up. They look gentle when viewed from a distance and slightly stark when approached. The steep exterior walls look like the entrance to a canyon, indeed it is an urbanistic facade created to clear the severe street diagonal. Entering the first-floor entrance, the front door to the residence is on the right, and in front is a small glass-walled bridge that leads to the atelier. The presence of the atelier, separated from the living space, is a piece that creates tension in a positive sense.

From a different perspective, the houses and apartments lining the residential area look as if they are sunk into the urban geography of the roofs, rather than standing on the ground. Living in a city where it is difficult to take in a quality external environment may be a matter of facing the “ground”.

With this in mind, I named this building “VALE” (small valley).
